Pushing one’s self beyond normal human limits is one of the traits that set apart American military Servicemembers.  But the toll taken on the body through training, combat, and service to country often leads to pain and injuries the general public never experiences.  These aches and pains are often treated with medications that, while effective, can have unwanted side effects.  However, there is another way to find relief from muscle tension, spasms, pain and headaches suffered by Veterans with musculoskeletal pain and injuries – Chiropractic Care.

The VA provides Chiropractic Care as part of the standard benefits from the Veterans Health Administration for all eligible Veterans.  Currently, 50 VA facilities have on-site Doctors of Chiropractic, and 16 of these facilities have academic affiliations with chiropractic colleges.  For facilities that do not have a chiropractor on staff the service is available through fee based care from the local community.

While becoming more commonly integrated into medical practice, many people are unfamiliar with the role of Chiropractic Care.  This treatment method has a proven track record at helping relieve symptoms from many types of musculoskeletal problems, and can be an important option for Veterans who want to avoid or reduce the medications they are taking for treatment of pain.  Doctors of Chiropractic have a minimum of 7 years of university training and practice and use their skills of manipulation of the muscles and joints to restore mobility and ease pain caused by a traumatic event or repetitive stress.

If you are interested in this treatment option for pain and joint problems, please talk with your VA Primary Care provider.
