ASoC - About Us
What is the Amputation System of Care?
The Amputation System of Care (ASoC) is a specialized program within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that aims to meet the unique needs of Veterans and service members with limb loss or at risk limbs. The program offers an interdisciplinary approach to amputation care focusing on comprehensive and whole health care by offering the latest practices in medical interventions, prosthetic limbs, assistive technology and rehabilitation strategies to restore function and thereby optimize quality of life.
Does the Amputation System of Care collaborate with teams of prosthetists and orthotists in the VA?
The ASoC collaborates with many teams and programs including the VA Orthotic, Prosthetic & Pedorthotic Clinical Services (OPPCS) program to ensure that Veterans with amputations receive customized prosthetic limbs and other aids, such as braces and orthotic shoes regain maximum independence in their daily lives. For more information about OPPCS https://www.rehab.va.gov/PROSTHETICS/OPPCS/index.asp
Does the Amputation System of Care provide training and education?
A vital part of the ASoC approach is to educate and train Veterans, service members, and their families on available support services such as counseling on self-care, prosthetic use and maintenance, and coping strategies. Additionally, ASoC provides training to health care professionals to ensure they have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide specialized care.
What measures does the VA take in preventing amputation?
The Preventing Amputations in Veterans Everywhere (PAVE) program is a comprehensive initiative by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) aimed at preventing or delaying amputations in Veterans. It focuses on early identification and treatment of at-risk veterans, particularly those with diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, and chronic kidney disease. The program involves a multidisciplinary team of rehabilitation physicians, vascular and orthopedic surgeons, nurse podiatrists, therapists, and prosthetic/orthotic staff to provide specialized care. The PAVE Clinic is an outpatient podiatry specialty clinic that follows Veterans from entry into the VA health-care system through all levels of care and back into the community.
